A Day at the School

Guffey School was created in 1895 during the Gold Rush, later becoming a Park County district school. In 1999 it became a Colorado Charter School, meaning some control over its operation was transferred to a local board.

You can read more about our history here.

When students first get to school, they are served with a snack and sit together in the cafeteria to listen to announcements, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and Guffey's school mission:

"Guffey School is a place of learning and service that nurtures the light of the individual spirit by by treasuring our countryside, the classroom, and the community, both local and global, in an atmosphere of safety, kindness, and joy."

They then are dismissed to their classrooms, which are multi-age and multi-grade. There are three classrooms with three amazing teachers. Each teacher takes three grade levels, K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 (middle school).

Students have a traditional curriculum of math, reading, and writing to include sentence structure, creative writing, and critical thinking in the mornings. Lunch is then served and students have recess.

In the afternoons, each class does science or social studies rotating through sections on the Earth sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences

3-8th graders are given the opportunity to participate in electives which may include art, robotics, photography, community service, and other subjects that are provided by our community volunteers.

There are multiple off-site field trips throughout the year, community events for holiday events, school oriented fundraisers, and melodramas that are performed by our students.
